Top Three-Things that Surprised Me

Hey Hey!

It's TUESDAY!  And I'm throwing it back to a post I haven't done in several years-Tuesday's Top Three.  Years ago, I shared my top three of all different kinds of things a couple times a month.  My top three hair products,  my top three spring nail colors,  my top three gifts for a six-year-old...you get the idea.

Today, I want to talk about the Top Three things that have surprised me over the past month...

#1 Country Rap
I had some boys in my car last week and Ebby Lee was playing the d.j. by letting them request songs.  One kiddo requested a song that sounded like country but then the guy started rapping.  When I asked what we were listening to his response, "Country rap".   Did you guys know this is out there?  Am I the only one who's never heard of country rap until now?  COUNTRY RAP?

#2 Night Guard
I went to the dentist recently and was told I really should get a night guard.  {Hi!  My name's Erika and I grind my teeth.}  I've been putting this off for years so when I was checking out I asked to make an appointment for the impressions for the night guard.  Thankfully, the receptionist said she'd go ahead and give me a quote.  Surprised again when the quote said $500.  $500 for something I'll sleep in?  I'm not sure what price I was expecting but I know it was less than that.  You guys I will now be sleeping in Nixon's extra flag football mouth guard every night to save my teeth and some money.

#3 Nose Hairs
Apparently thirty-five is the age when things really start changing or at least it's the age for me.  We were driving somewhere {I was in the passenger seat} and I flipped the visor down to look in the mirror at something on my face and I HAD APPROXIMATELY 75 NOSE HAIRS HANGING OUT OF MY NOSE!  To say this "surprised" me is putting it a tad too mildly.  This shocked me.  I didn't outwardly freak out in the car but as soon as we got home I went to town with tweezers.  Tab walked in the bathroom as I was taking care of the situation and then I freaked out about how I'd seen all these nose hairs in the car and his response was, "Yeah, I saw them GLISTENING in the light in the car but I wasn't gonna say anything".  Ummm....no words.  He actually said, "glistening".  Don't worry-after our discussion I'm one hundred percent confident that Tab will never keep something like that to himself.  I had flashbacks of health class when the teacher said, "By the time you've smelled yourself, ten people have already smelled you".  I was a little nervous about that statistic applying to nose hairs.  Consider this my PSA, check your nose hair situation, friends!  Needless to say, thanks to Amazon Prime and my new trimmer this should never be a problem again.

Clearly we're all friends here because I'm talking nose hairs.  So now it's your turn...what's surprised YOU lately?

Oh my goodness! How funny! Did you know that song is by Billy Ray Cyrus too? The kids played that song at our house the other day, and I was like “let me share achy breaky heart with y’all now.” Haha!

I have a mouth guard too, trust me... It's worth the $$! You will sleep SO much better with it and they last a really long time before you have to get them replaced.

Marci-I think THATs even more shocking!! And Lauren-I’m sure I’ll do it eventually but for some reason I was expecting her to say $100? 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️ Do they have Black Friday deals on night guards? Ha!

I get my nose hairs waxed! Total game changer!!! https://houseofhargrove.com/beauty-diaries-nose-waxing/

Hi Erika,
I am a 4th year dental student, and I also grind my teeth. 100% worth it. I don't know if you use bleaching trays, but I sometimes just put those in (both arches) without bleach in them and that helps as well. Unless you are a super grinder, in that case, you may eventually grind though the bleach tray. Do you wake up with a sore jaw in the morning??

Nose waxing is a real thing. Totally painless and worth it, highly recommend it.

By the time you've smelled yourself, 10 people have already smelled you. I'm dying. That needs to be needlepointed on a pillow.

Hahahaha I’m dying at this post-thank you for your honesty! And yes, the nose hair situation is legit—nail scissors are great for the job🤦‍♀️ Add that to things I’d never though I’d say. Would love to see more of these Top 3 posts—so fun!

Try these mouth guards. I found out I grind my teeth at night, also. I can’t stand bulky mouth guards. These are thin and cheap and definitely do the trick.

This is a good alternative to using your son's mouthguard ;) My husband has one and it works well.

Yeah, as a HUGE country fan raising teens, country rap has been a "thing" for awhile ;) I kinda like it, but my husband hates it! He's a Jerry Reed/Hank Jr country fan, lol! I tell ya, when you're kids become teenagers, you learn all sorts of pop cukture stuff ;)

I use to wear a mouth guard and bought mine at Target. It worked just fine. I had to wear one due to stress, or that's what the dentist said. I haven't worn it in years as I haven't been grinding anymore...odd.

Omg too funny!! One thing that surprised me is how hard it is to move from college to home. It takes a lot of organizing to make it all go smoothly haha!

Don’t waste the money at the dentist for that.....you can buy a kit on Amazon for $30-40. Night guards are a dental scam......,

Jen said...

Girl, get the mouth guard! It has been life changing for me. I think I spent around $800 on mine so yours sounds like a bargain! LOL! You will be so glad you did.

Lauren said...

OMG, i'm cracking up SO hard.

Erika Slaughter said...

Jen-I should add that I don't wake up with jaw pain or anything like that. I don't think mine is a bad case {yet}. I'm gonna give a cheap mouth guard a try-not Nixon's-that was just a joke! And see what I think about that before I splurge. A friend texted me that hers was $1000 so she like you-thought mine was a good deal!

Mary Vigil said...

Oh my, I just got the same news from my dentist, and I just LOVE your bargain idea!!! I'm going to order one now on Amazon! Thank you!!

Rachel said...

I'm 30 but you got me scared about my nose hairs! LOL going to check now! Let us know if you find a cheaper mouth guard that works bc I'm a teeth grinder too!

I am a fellow teeth grinder. I bought the expensive mouth guard from the dentist and chewed right through it!!! I buy them from Walmart now.

Donna said...

LAUGHING SO BIG!!!! All of this, priceless! The dentist tell EVERYONE literally EVERYONE...they need a guard and the price is outrageous. Agree with you. But seriously I don't know a person that hasn't been told they grind at night and need one.

The nose hairs. WTF????????????

Keep these posts coming. Made my day so far.

I have been reading your blog for years and I think this is the first post I have commented on because it is all too relatable. I literally have thought about all of these things in the last month too - except I had noticed some hair on my neck under my chin, not my nose... but maybe I should check my nose 😳
I had a dental guard made a few years back when I was in college on my parents dental insurance and had no idea what it cost but my dog chewed it up recently because I left it on the end table. I went to replace it and they told me it would be $600 and I almost choked.
I too joked about getting a football mouth guard and my dentist said that the store bought cheapies are fine as a temp solution but that the retainer like ones are better for your jaw alignment than the big thick mouth guard type ones ha!

What is it about car mirrors that they show every dang flaw? I leave the house thinking my makeup looks pretty good. Drive to the stop light and flip down the mirror and it's a freaky horror show! Did I put my makeup on with a trowel?!
Anyway, best post ever!

My husband has a night guard from the dentist. It is way cheaper than new teeth when you eventually grind them all down....seriously. That is what convinced my husband to take the plunge.

Love this post. I was dying laughing. I don't grind my teeth but clinch them when stressed. I have had TMJ for about 30 years now. The clinching makes it worse. I have the mouth guard from the dentist. Totally worth it to me. I can't remember how much I paid for mine. It's been several years now. Wasn't cheap though. My first one years ago was in the $1000 range. I'm thinking this was about $300.

Well, I just peed my pants on the nose hair one! Another thing that will happen the older you get, lol!

This post was hilarious! I am freaking out because I turned 40 this year and discovered a chin hair the other day. What the heck!! Now I am off to check my nose!

I’ve been a dental assistant for over 16 years and dental mouth guards/bite guards are most definitely worth the investment. But not all are created equal or adjusted correctly. Please do not buy an over the counter one as they perpetuate grinding and cause your TMJ joint to not be in the ideal spot. Plus if the material used is soft or rubber like it will actually be causing interferences with your bite. Find a dentist that specializes in bioesthetic occlusion and get one from them ideally. They should fit on your top teeth, not the bottom, and be very specifically adjusted so that all your teeth hit together at the same time when you are wearing it. You need an anterior ramp so that when you slide your lower jaw forward, just your upper and lower two front teeth are the only ones touching. Then when you slide side to side, just your canines should guide you. Our office has helped many ppl with TMJ issues and i can’t tell you how many ppl come to our office that bought over the counter guards and it hasn’t helped and has made things feel worse. Our cost is about $600ish and that includes all the adjustments in the first year. They can last for many years if you take care of them. They protect your teeth from wear, will minimize grinding, put your TMJ joint in an optimal position so your jaw is happy, and because it minimizes grinding you won’t have more tori growing inside your mouth. Tori are the bony growths under your tongue and on the cheek side that continue to grow due to the extreme forces of clenching and grinding as your body lays down more bone to withstand the forces. A properly made and adjusted guard will greatly minimize or eliminate grinding. Lots of info sorry, but I don’t want ppl to make mistakes like many of our patients did before we got them stable! I love your blog:)

haha! I laughed out loud at your mouthguard statement. My boys have one of those and I'd be tempted to use theirs as well over paying $500 for a one! Anyway, I didn't know about country rap either save for some song that Billy Ray Cyrus is singing in here lately. My boys play that one a lot! Have a great weekend!
